SUMMARY: Installing Perl from Freeware CD-ROM

Sorry for the delay in preparing this summary. I was out of town for a few
days.

Here's the responses to my original question which was as follows:

What is the correct procedure for installing perl from the OSF/1 v3.2a
freeware CD? I'm having trouble installing it from the kits/Prebuilt
subdirectory. Using Configure or installp the procedure aborts with a "can't
open doSH" or a simialr message.

I tried it under ksh and sh with no change in results.

I'm trying to install it onto an Alphaserver 400 4/166.

I guess the following response is as "offical" as one can get
with freeware.

I'm the perpetrator of the Alpha freeware CDROM, and I advise anyone with
access to the Internet to use the CD nowadays as a convenient catalogue rather
than as a source of software, because most of the software on it has been
super-
seded by more recent versions. Perl is one of these. So for Perl and many
other things, I recommend seriously that you get the latest version; in the
case of Perl, I have

Along a similar vein, the following response indicates where to get the
latest version.

I'd get a copy of perl 5.001 from gatekeeper.dec.com - it builds fine on
Digital UNIX and is the latest and greatest.

And here's another location where Perl V5 can be found...

I would suggest you get the latest version of perl5 (perl5.001m) from
ftp.wpi.edu:/perl5/ and install that version. It has many
improvements and fairly good instructions for how to install it.

I think I will forget the CD-ROM and get the latest Perl release.
In addition to those mentioned above, I'd like to thank those who sent
possible
ways to get the CD-ROM version to work. Although I feel these articles are
too
long to post here, if you're interested, drop me a note and I'll mail them to
you.
