POP: can't lock /var/spool/pop/user

Hi !
I have a little problem with POP.
Our environment:
- a mailserver running Dec Unix 3.2C, /usr/lib/mh/popd -p 110
- clients running MS Windows, ChameleonNFS, their mail-programm.
I can get a connection between client and server, the authentication
happens. But if I have some mails for this user, I get the message
  unable to lock /var/spool/pop/user.
I have tried the username as the primary file, the path
../mail/user as the primary file, I tried to create a soft (hard, too)
link between this two files, nothing works !
