My previous message reminded me I never posted a summary for my last
question -- I'm very sorry about this. My original question had to do
with optimizing a machine for i/o, and minimizing the memory used by
the UFS subsystem (since the server is using only AdvFS).

The only response I got was from alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com, who told me:
--
As shipped today Digital UNIX will use all of free memory
for buffer cache. Typically the UBC parameters are used
to keep the I/O subsystem from trying to use all of it.
--
I've left the UBC parameters alone, and the machine seems to be doing
fine.
Alan also thought that 3.2C might allow one to compile UFS out of the
kernel, but I've found this not to be the case. The kernel will
build, but the machine will panic when it reboots. The most I've
been able to do is to set the vfs:bufcache parameter to 1.
Drew
