async ports on alpha 1000

I'm running OSF 3.0 on an alpha 1000 and trying to run some
applications that talk to a device over tty00 and/or tty01
at 9600 baud. Sometimes things work fine, other times I
see dropped characters. I've had similar reports from
another site. We could both have flaky cables I guess,
but I wondered if anyone else had experienced such
problems.
