National characters in mail?

I would like to use eight bit characters in mail contents on Digital UNIX.

How can a stop mail from stripping the eigth bit in the text?

(I got a new version of sendmail for Ultrix, from Digital, but I hope
that UNIX is better than Ultrix in this respect :-)
