Summary: How to print more than 80 char in a line

My original problem:

We have a HPLaserJet III which is connected to DEC 3000.
How to print out more than 80 characters in a line and still get
portrait orientation ( suppose the font is very small, can fit
more than 80 in a line).

He suggested to create a print filter for that printer and
put the code to change the fonts in the filter (if: filter).
He also sent me some his c sources of filters.
I did some modification on the source code to fit our need
and solved our problem.
