Ok, I have a bunch of DNS-related problems locally and while our Alpha
is one of the plagued systems, I'm not positive that it's the culprit.
Our primary DNS box is heavily burdened (a MicroVAX II with 40-70+
users using PMDF PINE), so my problem might not be Alpha-related.
(Ever see a MicroVAX with loads of 34-38 ? :^(
One Alpha 2000/300, currently acting as NNTP server, WWW server and
supporting a few X users. I'm running V3.2 release 214 on this box.
The news server is refusing connections because gethostbyaddr isn't
returning _permitted_ hostnames. Occasionally, Netscape links will be
refused (with a complaint about domains not existing) and a second hit
of the same link will work. Actually, that is quite frequent.
Also, when a site isn't reachable with the browser, one can usually
ping that address from a Xterm and then access the site easily.
Any bells ringing? It's a frequent, but slippery, problem and I'm not
having any luck tracking it down. I'm starting to suspect timeouts in
DNS lookups against our primary server, but would love to hear ideas.
