Hi Folks,
I received a number of responses which highlighted essentially the
same things.
First, I wasn't as complete as I should have been about the config.
1. /var/spool/mail is an NFS mount
2. NFS locking is enabled.
The recommendatations were to change the sendmail.cf to forward to the
NFS server rather than let the mail be handled locally.
Also, OSF allows you to specify how mail locking is to be handled.
Using /usr/sbin/rcmgr one can alter the default locking mechanism.
Most recommended changing the value to "5". This I did and my problems
seem to have been cleared up.
#rcmgr set MAILLOCKING 5
Info around this can be found in (7) mail_manual_setup via man

Subject: mail files locked
Reply-To: jj_at_uniprise.com
Hi All,
Occassionaly some of my users have a problem with thier mail files in
the spool directory.
They seem to get locked and I have to delete or move them for mail to
start flowing again.
This is a network of Alpha's running 3.2 and 3.2C
Here is the output...
> /usr/lib/sendmail -v greg </etc/motd
greg... Connecting to (local)...
about to exec
wally:/local/home/jj
> binmail: cannot lockf /usr/spool/mail/greg
Mail saved in dead.letter
Any ideas?
Thanks,
