Hello managers, Norway calling !
Here is the summary of the responses I got from my request concerning the
above subjects:
1. About 'stale NFS handles':
Do NOT take for granted that clients will have OK nfs filesystems after doing
ANYTHING on the server that require that the server must be rebooted.
Previously we have done minor changes to the kernel and if the server only
experienced a quick reboot, the clients seemed to come up OK. Jan Berger
Henriksen (takk skal du ha, Jan !) said that if the server is unavailable for
30+ minutes, the clients have to remount/reboot. I assume this has something
to do with NFS timeout settings.
2. About CPU id/firmware upgrade:
The consensus was: Trust uerf. If you upgrade your system with new hardware
you cannot be certain that there is an accompanying tuck-on-label describing
the new system id. Also the 'show config' command from the console prompt
should do the trick. With respect to the firmware upgrade, following the
output from 'uerf' or /var/adm/messages will give you a nice lead. The 'Mxx'
from 'uerf' or /var/adm/messages is the clue when upgrading firmware
according to the "DEC3000 Update Utility Procedures" document on the v3.3
Firmware CD. In general; the M300/300L/300X/300LX need the M300_V6_2.EXE
firmware, the M400/400S/600/600S/700 need M400_V6_2.EXE and the
M500/500S/500X/800/800S/900 need the M500_V6_2.EXE
