Hi once again--
My original question involved some subtle problems with NFS3 timeouts between
an OSF/1 3.0 box and an SGI running Irix 5.3XFS. At this point, our problem
remains unsolved, but we have determined that NFS is not to blame. With one
notable exception, NFS3 appears to work just fine between Alphas and SGIs.
The problem has turned out to be related to the RAID box on the SGI, and is
characterized by slow, start-and-stop I/O to the device.
Although it's not related to our specific problem, there is a bug in the OSF/1
NFS client code that is manifested as an infinite stream of setattr calls to
the SGI server when the remote filesystem on the SGI is XFS. I think this is
fixed in the current release of Digital Unix, but not in OSF/1 3.0. We're
currently awaiting a patch from DEC for that.
