I've been unable to reply to the person who sent this message,
so I'm posting it here to allow him/her and the others who
sent me ideas (none of which worked alas) some more
information in the hope that it finds the answer to the problem.
Thanks again,
Steve.

This machine has been fine for ages, supporting its X
display. But one day - I don't know which day because the
machine was in someone else's care, the display is
only a terminal rather than graphical after the machine
has booted (normally the login prompt appears then
xdm starts up and the login is changed).
One other machine here had this problem. When OSF/1
was reinstalled on it (for an upgrade - it wasn't a drastic
solution to fix the X display) the problem went away and
hasn't reoccurred.
> Do you see something like a prompt (can you log in ?) but X is not
running.
You can log in fine, X is running - just not on the console. Even xdm
is running (so the entry hasn't disappeared from /sbin/rc3.d - I've
checked that and the real file in /sbin/init.d).

Now we come it maybe... The file has continual repetitions
of:-
couldn't open device
error (pid 663): Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly: 1
error (pid 675): server failed for :0, giving up
error (pid 663): Display :0 cannot be opened
At the bottom is the line
error (pid 663): Display :0 is being disabled
PID 663 is the only remaining process, it is the xdm process.

The Xservers file is unchanged and refers to files that exist. The
file is the same as for a machine that still works.

As far as I am aware, it only has one card. The hardware configuration
of the machine has not changed for some time.
Many thanks for your help so far, hopefully this will enable you
to shed some more light on the matter.
Best Wishes,
Steve.
