Sorry for the delay in my summary.

The original question was:

> Does anyone have a hacked-for-OSF version of GNU smalltalk out
> there, or know of any other smalltalk compilers around I
> could get for the alpha? I am running OSF/1 3.0 and 3.2.

I got back three responses. One person told me to ftp to
gatekeeper.dec.com and get /pub/gnu/smalltalk*. This was the same
version I got from prep.ai.mit.edu, so this was not the answer for me.
Another said that GNU was working on a new release of SmallTalk which
would support Alphas. When this will be coming out is unknown; the
software is still in the alpha stage (no pun intended).

The third mentioned a commercial package called VisualWorks by
ParcPlace-Digitalk which is ported to the Alpha. He also said that
the GNU smalltalk class libraries are suspect at best, because of bugs
and bad design decisions.

I think I will just have my research student(s) run GNU smalltalk on
the Ultrix platform for now, and figure things out for themselves.
:-)
