Some time ago, I asked the following question:
>
>I looked in the archives for something recent and couldn't find anything
>that approximated the conflicting login acounting information we are
>seeing.
>
>We recentely upgraded from 2.0 to 3.2 (no letters, numbers or dashes),
>and are seeing strange conflicting information from ps, w, finger, and
>last. For example, someone will not be logged in, no processes running,
>and yet show up in the w listing (this is intermittant). Also, if you finger
>someone for their last login it does not always (again, intermittantly)
>correlate with the output from last (the user won't show up at all in the
>last listing). We have users logging in under DECnet, LAT and TCP/IP.

>I complained to Digital, and they sent me a "patched" copy of w, which
>did not change a thing. Besides that, all I've received is silence. Does
>anyone know of patches that might correct this? Also, is there a list of
>"recommended" patches for 3.2 to correct common problems such as
>this? I've looked in the patch 3 kit, but I'm hesitant to use any of it after a

First off, I wish to thank the following people for their responses:

Selden E Ball Jr <SEB_at_LNS62.LNS.CORNELL.EDU>
<nicolis_at_celfi.phys.univ-tours.fr>
Spider Boardman <spider_at_orb.nashua.nh.us>
Michael Matthews <matthewm_at_sgate.com>
Don Newcomer <newcomer_at_dickinson.edu>
Guy Helmer <ghelmer_at_alpha.dsu.edu>
Linda Jones of Digital OSF/1 support

A synopsis of what I found out is as follows:

1) This has been recognized by Digital as a problem, under 3.x releases
2) There is a patched version of w available (I hadn't installed it correctly
- after I did, it worked fine)
3) There is a patch kit OSF320-172 avaiable to (hopefully - I have yet to
install it) fix the anomolous things we are seeing, according to Digital
OSF/1 support

Individual responses are available upon request.
