Ok, I got part of my problem solved. My reverse DNS now appear to be working,
but I am still having the following problem that has successfully baffled me.
User A logs into machine A, and gets assigned an IP number. This IP number has
a corresponding name of m1.domain.com. User A is using Windows(95 or 3.1) and
starts his browser. He goes to the Netscape home page and selects 'Net
Search'. He enters the term he is searching for and his browser says 'Host
contacted waiting for reply.' It then hangs indefinetly, never completing his
request. User A tries some other sites, for example, www.macromedia.com,
www.infoseek.com, and others. Each says 'Host contacted, waiting for reply.'
Some even send some data, such as backgrounds, but then stop. User A calls
befuddled service provider to register a complaint. Service provider beats
head against wall and finally breaks down and send UPDATE to mailing list.
User B performs the identical operations as above, using the same browser, but
is on a Macintosh or Warp. He gets a successful response to his search query
immediately. Doesn't need to call, doesn't need to complain. Service provider
has nervous breakdown.
What could possibly be causing this? As a side note, when User A logs into
another terminal server(with a different Class C of IPS) he has no problem.
What gets me is that the problem appears to only effect Windows users who
connect to one of two specific subnets.
I have already received some great advice from many of you and it confirmed
everything I had here. My reverse DNS problem turned out to be a result of
problems with my provider Sprint. Thanks to everyone who replied.
Any ideas/suggestions/condonlences on my current situation, would be
appreciated.
