password at boot time

I requested this same type of information about 3 years ago for DECStations.
I received a c program and a shell script if I remember correctly. If the
DECstatinos boot into multi-user, no problem. But if they boot into
single-user mode, the person sitting there has to enter the root password to
continue. This has worked great for us. The machines I was/am concerned
about are in a public lab. I'd prefer not having the machine come up into
single-user mode for just anyone. I can post this solution to the list if
there is demand for it, otherwise I will respond to individuals on this. I
guess this means I had better find the stuff and get it packaged up.
