Hi--
We've attempted to install a NIS master server on an Alpha 3000/800 running
OSF/1 3.0, but had to back down due to extreme sluggishness.
We followed all of the intructions in the Network Configuration Guide, except
that we only want to deal with the passwd, group, and hosts databases. The
Alpha is the master server; there are no slave servers or clients (there will
be clients once the the server actually works).
Having configured everything correctly, I reboot, login, and as a test, try
to change my password with yppasswd (we are running rpc.yppasswdd). I get
the "Changing NIS password" message and then it hangs for a good five minutes
before asking me my old password. Ditto when I try to su.
Some details that might be helpful:
* We have ypbind and ypserv patched from OSFV30-214, but had the same problems
with the unpatched versions.
* I listed the machine in the ypservers database. While not a slave server,
I'm pretty sure the master server needs to be listed here.
* We are running ypbind with '-S domainname,hostname.of.master.server'
* The hostname of the master server is listed in /etc/hosts.
* There are no errors produced when doing a make in /var/yp.
* No errors logged by ypbind or ypserv.
* I changed /etc/svc.conf to 'local,yp' for hosts, passwd and group.
* The normal /etc/passwd and /etc/group contain only system accounts.
* The NIS passwd file contains roughly 6500 user accounts.
* We are running BASE security.
* The load average on the machine is not affecting the speed of NIS.
Any clues as to why this is so dog-slow would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks!
jonathan
