Alphaserver 1000 memory modules

Hello Unix Gurus,

I'm pretty new to the Alphas and DUnix and the Manager's Group has been a
great help in picking up tips, tricks and tidbits! I've even been able to
respond to a couple postings with some insight of my own ;-)

I am wonderring if any of you out there in Alphaland happen to know if
standard 1x36, 2x36, 4x36 and 8x36 70ns 72 pin PC style simms will work
in a Digital Alphaserver 1000 (4/233).

I've had my hands in the box as we have a few lazy simm retainer clips
that caused some hardware memory errors (crashdata pointed it to a bad
processor board!) and while rooting around the simm area it dawned on me
that the simms appear physically identical to plain old PC simms. My
inquiries to a few Digital hardware techs about the compatibility of the
simms with standard PC parity-bit simms have resulted in three
affirmatives and a gaggle of "dunnos", two of the yeas were from onsite
hardware techs, but while they were official Digital onsite hardware
techs I got the overall impression that I knew more about the AServer
1000 than they did!

I have had quotes on 64MB of ECC memory ranging from around $3000 to
$5000 and I can pick up five 4x36 70ns 16MB simms for under $2500 from my
own sources!

We're a little tight on memory at the moment and it would be nice to pick
some up "off the shelf" if possible.

Thanks for your time,
