I've got my binay file running on all my machines!
I've received a great deal of answers, and this list it's very
interesting and dynamic. Having entered a couple of days ago I've got my
folder full of interesting messages.
I am sure to forget someone for what I apologise, but I'll try to
list all the people I want to thank:
Ian Piumarta <piumarta_at_prof.inria.fr>
I've got Ian's binary file running.
Steffen Kluge <kluge_at_ave.ac.agit.de>
Offered me an executable.
pasquale_at_omega.ien.it
"XV comes with the Alpha Freeware Disc, which should be available
from DEC directly". He offered to send me an executable.
n.madden_at_ucc.ie
Offered me an executable.
Fitzpatrick <thom_at_alldata.com>
Gave me this useful (at least for rookies like me) information:

error we

What you can do to fix the source is make sure that there is a #define
basename
The way these sources work, since they are s'posed to work on alot
of machines, is they define most of the standard library functions
themselves,
and then when you configure it (the Configure script) they look for existing
versions of these functions. What you need to do is grep -i basename *
and see which files in the distribution its declared in.
I had to do this to set it up on AIX; several of the strxxx functions it
did not find.

Note: I'll try to compile it even having found an executable in
order to learn as much as possible.
Winfried Huber <win_at_tukan.ffb.eunet.de>
Told me about 'imagemagick' in such a way that I cannot avoid
trying to get it. He offered himself to send it to me if necessary and to
help me install it.
Jim Belonis <belonis_at_dirac.phys.washington.edu>
Sent me this post he had received:

I've put the sources for xv-3.01 on ftp.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de
in the directory /pub/roleplay/xv/xv-3.01.osf1.3.tar.gz
Those of you without ftp access can mail to
ftpmail_at_Informatik.Uni-Oldenburg.DE to get the sources mailed.
The programm compiles without special switches or use of other compilers
than cc on an Alpha AXP 3000-300 with OSF1/1.3. Just edit the Imakefile
type "xmkmf", "make depend" and "make".
I've included a file README.Oldenburg that explains the changes I've made
to the program

Offered me source and executable files. Although I love English and
this list is for me a wonderful place to practice, I have to admit that
receiving a mail in Spanish made me so happy that I have to include it:
