SUMMARY: Crash - is it serious?

Greetings:

I had a "kernel memory fault" that crashed my system overnight and my
question was, "is it serious"?

The answer:

Probably not. There are ways to dig deeper and find the source of the
error but acc'd to the good Dr. Tom Blinn, if its intermittent (which it is
- this is the first known occurance), its likely nothing to worry about.
In fact, he says that cosmic rays can even cause this to happen (he says he
is serious!) So, evidently Vicksburg, MS was bombarded by a gang of
nefarious cosmic rays last night or I have cockroaches in my computer.
Where's that can of Raid?

Dr. Blinn does point out, however, that if it starts re-occuring, its
likely a good idea to replace the memory.

Many thanks to the following responders:

"Dr. Tom Blinn, 603-881-0646" <tpb_at_zk3.dec.com>
Simon Rosenthal <simon_at_locus.com>
Dave Cherkus <cherkus_at_UniMaster.COM>

Dave Cherkus provided a nice little previous summary on this very topic
some time back about how you can track the problem further (but it
eventually leads to the need for some experienced help). If anyone would
like a copy, I'd be happy to send it along (without the cockroaches).

Anyone know where I can get a good cosmic ray shield? Our Wal-mart is out
of stock...

Cheers,

Cary Talbot
