The path I took:

I used "popclient" which could be obtained at <
ftp://ftp.mal.com/pub/pop>.
It was really straight forward to configure.
1) tar xvf popclient_3.0b4.tar
2) cd popclient-3.0b4
3) ./configure
4) make
5) As "root", type: make install
6) Created a ".poprc" file in my $HOME directory following the example file
"sample.poprc".
7) Put a crontab entry on my local workstation to execute "popclient".
* * * * * /usr/local/bin/popclient -s -o /var/spool/mail/winger <popmail-server>
