Also the latest version of Netscape out is 2.00beta 4 and the OSF/1 one is for version 2.0--but it runs OK on my machine under v3.0. Just my 0.02 Stam uunet!qc.bell.ca!dmckilli responded: There is apparently an OSF initiative to do a standard port for all the OSF members, including DEC. They have a various impressive looking web page at http://www.gr.osf.org/projects/web/java/. However I haven't heard of them actually delivering anything yet, and I'm not sure I'd hold my breath. > Also, I've used the Netscape > binary available for DEC OSF/1, but my copy is old. Is there a Java-capable > Netscape (or other browser) available for DU? Well, it's getting there. Java itself, no. Netscape 2.0 Beta 4 supports Sun, HP and SGI, but DEC is still not there (nor IBM's RS/6000). It is supposed to be there before the commercial release of 2.0 though. On the other hand, Javascript works in Beta 4 for OSF/1 (Javascript is kind of a, well, scripted version of Java, interpreted at the source code level instead going through the Java compiler -- for more information, see http://home.netscape.com/comprod/products/navigator/version_2.0/script/). Best way to keep up is Digital Espresso's (no, not *that* Digital) Java magazine at http://www.io.org/~mentor/jnIndex.html. There is a 2.ob4 version available for an Alpha and it runs on a system that has Digital UNIx 3.2c, but it doesn't support Java. I got it from: http://home.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/2.0/relnotes/unix-2.0b4.html Part of the README says: ______________________________________________________________________ Java Applet Support: Java Applet support is available for SunOS 4.1, Solaris 2.3, Solaris 2.4, HPUX, IRIX and Linux. To run Java applets with the Java-enabled version, the Navigator needs to be able to load Java class files from a file called moz2_0.zip. This file is included in the distribution, but must be moved to any of these directories: The directory from which you are running Netscape. /usr/local/netscape/java/classes /usr/local/lib/netscape $HOME/.netscape If you were running Java with an earlier version of the Netscape Navigator, you need to replace your old moz2_0.car file with the moz2_0.zip file supplied in this distribution. ______________________________________________________________________ I look forward to your summary. I have been told that the problem is the Alpha is 64 bit chip. Is there any truth to this? I am currently running Digital UNIX 3.2C on DEC 300/800's and an AlphaServer 2100 4/275. Thank you. He wasn't a salesman by trade (very obvious in his demeanor and explainations) but rather a programer. He was VERY excited about the whole Java thing and said that the underlying motive behind it all was to put innovation back in the computer software mainstream and, while they're at it, knock Microsoft down a few notches. It was very entertaining to talk with him. When I inquired about DU versions of Java, he said that while every platform would be supported with working versions of Java-browsers and even run-time library support, DEC had not as yet officially joined the Java "club". Disappointing news to me but seeing as how even Microsoft has "signed a letter of intent to license Java", I am hopeful that DEC will see the light and jump on the band-wagon, at least in some fashion. Thought I'd fill you in on what I know..... Cheers, Cary _____________________________________________________________________ Cary A.
