Default route at boot time

I am missing something fairly obvious, I think. I wish to establish a default
route at boot time and I thought that all I had to do was make an entry in
/etc/gateways and, hey presto, one default route every time I reboot. BUT It
doesn't seem to work that way, at least not for me. So I have to remember to
type 'route add default 152.158.1.222' after every reboot - and sometimes I
forget and our dial up to our Internet Service Provider fails.

Am I missing something very obvious? or doesn't it work that way. I'm using
OSF/1 version 3.0 (since renamed DEC UNIX).

Thanks for any help.

John
