I'd like to mainly thank Spider Boardman <spider_at_orb.nashua.nh.us>
for his detailed explanation about password encryption on Digital
UNIX vs. Ultrix, although that only tangentially helped with the
problem.
I called Digital support, and they stepped me through everything
again, and it worked. I think the critical difference was the change
in security levels. The Digital Unix "Security" manual says that you
must run secsetup before secauthmigrate. I recommend you run this
immediately before secauthmigrate. In other words, run secsetup,
select ENHANCED, reboot to single user mode, and then move the old
/etc/passwd and run secauthmigrate. I think the password file change
is important--I had already merged the password files when I changed the
security level, and I think that caused a problem. Even though I
tried to copy the username:ULT files, it still didn't work.
Thanks to all. Can I mention that I think this is one of the most
information-dense mailing lists I've ever been on?
