From what I've learned this morning I'll clarify what is happening
to the machine here. The machine isn't going all the way down to single
user mode. The windowing environment (xdm) dies, network services die, the
machine still responds to ping. After one of these incidents only the
kernel, init, nfsd, and getty are left running. The system is on a UPS and
there have been no problems with power.
