Need ideas for distributed passwording between Ultrix & Digital Unix?

G'day,

I've only recently subscribed to "alpha managers" and "dec managers" so I
hope this question hasn't been asked b4, if it has I apologize...

We currently admin 70+ Ultrix 4.4 boxes running Enhanced Security
(Kerberos), we also have 15+ Alpha boxes (and growing) I need to
incorporate into the existing password environment. This is a university
site, so I'd like to have ppl use a "single" login/password on all
machines (except for some special exceptions).

What to do?

Our inital thought was to use DECAthena, but after spending the last month
trying to get it work, we have almost given up. The only sites that we
know of who use Athena, have had to heavily modify it. We suspect our main
problem is trying to run the Moira server on a Alpha rather than a
DECStation. :(

Our next idea was to use NIS. Problem is we really need to use something
better than BASE (BSD) passwording. C2 looks good under DU3.2, but the
Ultrix boxes would freak.

At the moment it looks as though we are going to have to run Ultrix
Enhanced Security and C2/NIS in parallel. Forcing everyone to use an Alpha
to change their passwords. Using a script to convert the "prpasswd"
database into an Ultrix "auth" database (remembering to use crypt#1 under
C2), regularly copy this "auth" and the "passwd" file across to the Ultrix
Kerberos master for distribution through the Ultrix environ. *gack*

Any other suggestions, please! DCE? Kerberos for DU3.2, maybe?
