Console terminal type

We have an AlphaServer 1000 4/200 running OSF/1 V3.0 (factory-installed).
We have a standard VGA monitor connected to the built-in VGA port on the
system board, as shown in the Basic Installation and Owner's guides.

Our problem: Unix doesn't seem to know how to talk to this console. It's
as though the terminal type were set incorrectly -- more doesn't stop
after presenting one screen of text, vi doesn't navigate through a file
or modify it properly.

At login, the terminal type is set to vt100. We have tried several other
values, like vt200, vt300, pccons, xterm, dumb, ansi, and none enable us
to use vi or more.

What is the correct terminal type to specify for the built-in VGA console?
What else do we need to do to get the VGA to work properly?
