I didn't ask the original question but I have lost the name of the person
who asked it. I have the solution though, so I though I would post it since
I have been tracking the exact same problem.

The question was: With wu-ftpd-2.4 installed, 'dir' and 'ls' commands would
produce no output.

The answer was that ~ftp/bin had dynamically linked executables in it. So
all that is necessary is to put /sbin/ls in ~ftp/bin instead /usr/bin/ls
and everything works fine.
