        Hello,

        2 weeks ago we had a information DAY form Digital( group support
        open system).

        Here are the announcements form digital for Digital UNIX (OSF) 4.0

        1/ Hardware:

        New machines with more PCI plug-in possibilities

        Today release EFT : need to wait for official release to obtain
        a list of new supported drivers.

        2/ New technologies:

        - device naming
        - dynamic device recognition
        - standard conformity
        - New graphics tools for managment

        3/ Operating system on 2 cd

        - Standalone environment with all tools of basic system
        - complete graphic instal on working station

        4/ kernel

        - The kernel can be static or dynamically loaded at boot time
        - sysconfigtab contain hardware options.
        - No more "not binary" files in /sys/conf/files
        - Dynamic kernel in option
                in this case no more /vmunix , osf_boot read sysconfigtab

        - better support of 'out digital/third part' drivers
        - less files et disk spaces for it.

                1210 files/46MB --> 190 files/17mb
        Modules notions ( ex: ufs.mod)


        5/ LSM
        Number max of volum/plexes: 4091
        New tools for it: volsave/volrestore

        LVM disappear !!! (out !!!)

        6/ ADVS

        - Best effort for this product
        ( better traitment of : hardware errors, smp performance,
        msfsck, .....)
        - Graphic integration ( CDE.. remote managment)

        7/ UFS-NFS

        - NFS client code parallelisation.
        - TCP supported for large networks ( wan..)
        - ACL (access control language supported)

        8/ C language et compile

        - DEC C become C by default
        - C is alwaysa part of BASIC system ( It will change in future ???)
        (personnal appreciation: a.valeix
        It won't change until we need to compile the KERNEL..isnt'it? )

        9/Decthreads:
        - adjustment for conformity ( 1003.1c)
        asynch signals given to all thread ( main tread before 4.0)
        -synch signals ( One handler by process)

        10/ LADEBUG include in basic system
        11/ DHCP
                - extension of bootp protocol
                - graphic config interface
        12/ SLIP - PPP
        
        - SLIP best effort:
        automatic number delivering
        user slip - login shell=slconfig
        - PPP best effort
          options negociation.
          security ( authentification)
          daemon: /usr/sbin/pppd

        13 /network: routing

        routed: rip v1
        ogated: rip v1,egp v1, hello
        gated 3.5
        rip v1/2
        bgp v2/3/4
        egp v2
        hello
        ospf v2


        14 / Ip multicast routing

        host group on D class:
        (224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255)
        - possibilty to join or leave an "host group"
        tools:
        mrouted, mrinfo, mtrace

        15/ LAT
        Driver LAT dynamicaly loaded

        16/ MIME ( used by dtmail)

        17/
         -Netscape on basic system
         - tool : unix to dos
         - bootable pack ( bandes in french)
