Dear all,

My original query was:

>Here's the story so far. I've got a hard disk sitting in one of these nice new
>StorageWorks boxes hooked up to an Ultrix 4.4 server. This server machine is
>used by a number of Ultrix clients. I've also got a Digital Unix server used by
>a number of Digital Unix clients.
>
>Here's my intention. I intend taking this StorageWorks box to the Digital Unix
>server and in this way starting the process of unifying user's accounts.
>
>So my question is - can I naively take the StorageWorks box off the Ultrix
>machine and connect it to the DU machine, and have the DU machine recognise all
>the partitions and data currently set up in the disk. I am currently in the
>process of doing a back-up of the disk contents. So do you have any advise,
>pointers, warnings for me.
>
>I guess my major worry is can partitions and data placed on a disk by an Ultrix
>system, be recognised wholesale by a Digital Unix (3.2) system?
>
>All help would be appreciated as I'm hoping to attempt it in about 24 hours!!!!

The response of the following was most appreciated:

To summarise:
1.
A number of people have done this many times before without any problems
(which was reassuring to hear). It has been done with systems using 8 KB block
size; they are not sure if 4 KB block size file systems are supported on Digital
UNIX (apparently only small disks used this by default).

2.
The new machine that you are putting the new disk on will need to know about the
disk drives in vmunix ie. whether they are rz26, rz28 or whatever. You will need
to check the kernel config file in /usr/sys/conf/mips/"name" on the Digital Unix
machine - or check that there is already one of the same disk models on the
machine (as there was in my case). Make sure the disk drives are shown in this
file, if not, you will need to add them and then rebuild the kernel
(/etc/doconfig -c "Config file"). When you reboot, the system will recognize the
drives.

3.
Plug the disk into the DU system and install it (eg. you may need to do a
MAKEDEV) and do a /usr/sbin/fsck on the character filesystem. It will say
things like "Impossible interleave =0 in superblock set to default?" Just say
yes to the questions, and after fsck runs, mount the disk.

3.
In fstab, you can add those partitions that were on the Ultrix 4.4 and their
associated mount points and you should be in business.

4.
You'll get messages each time you boot about the disk being an Ultrix disk, but
you can ignore them. No-one seems sure if there are any performance issues with
doing this, however.

5.
If you have the "Ultrix to DEC OSF/1 Migration Guide" it covers this
rather well.

Thanks again for everyone's help. By the way, I managed to get the disk
transfered and everything up and running in 2 1/2 hours last night!!

Regards,
Graeme
