Moving system boot disk

Another question...

On this AlphaStation 600/5 DU 3.2c: The software was FIS on one of the
internal drives. As this is a 'special' system, the internal drives will
have to be removed [permanently] from the unit.

The system is to boot from external drives. I have never 'moved' the
system from one device to another--is it as simple as dumping the system
out to the other device and booting from that device. This is UNIX, I
think not! Any advice, suggestions--no flames, please.

The devices involved are all RZ28's.
