Hello,

I would like to thank the following people for responding so far, eventhough
I have not moved a milimetre from where I first started. I will summary my
actions upto now and hope that these and some more nice people will be able
to provide me with a hint.

History:
-------
I am trying to configure a 14,4 (V.32/V.42bis) modem on a Decstation 3000/300LX
running OSF/1 2.1 for dial-in only. Later I plan to configure slip or ppp on
his port (but this now seems like a distant dream).

What I have tried up to know:

1. Put an entry in /etc/inittab:
    tty00:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/getty /dev/tty00 dialin vt100

2. Put an entry in /etc/gettydefs:
    dialin# B19200 HUPCL CS8 # B19200 SANE IXANY TAB3 HUPCL CS8 #login: #dialin

3. Put an entry in /etc/remote:
    modem:dv=/dev/tty00:br#38400:pa=none:

4. Commented out the above entry in /etc/inittab and typed 'init q'

5. Tried 'tip modem' and i got:
tty00: No such device or address

6. I uncommented the line in inittab and did again 'init q'
At this point the dxconsole started presenting the message:
        (repeatedly):
                getty: cannot open tty00, errno:6
This continues to show untill I comment out the line in inittab and
do an 'init q'

7. I rebuilt the kernel by first booting from the generic kernel (having the
modem connected to the port and turned on) I looked in /var/adm/messages and
there was no error message about the controller scc0. Before rebuilding i
checked the the line for the scc0 controller was in the confiuration file as
follows:
controller scc0 at tc0 slot 5 vector sccintr

I repeated all the above steps but nothing changed.

-Am i doing something completely wrong?
-Is this a hardware malfunction or is there a program running in the
background hat takes up the port?
- Does it matter that this machine has x.25 configured on it?
-Are there any ways to test the tty00 port?

Thank you all once again for bearing with me.

Stavros.
