ksh: set -o notify

Dear colleagues:

During the process of teaching a few students a few things about the
Kornshell, one item they were interested in was the ability of the shell
to notify them asynchronously when a background process had completed.
What I discovered was somewhat disconcerting... the "notify" option
doesn't work as published in your login shell! It works fine if I spawn
a new ksh and specify '-n' or once I'm in the ksh typee 'set -n' or
'set -o notify', however, it just won't work in my login shell, which
of course, is where I want it to work.

Any ideas or comments? Digital people, I would appreciate some input
from you as well.

Sincerely,
Mark Perlman
