OSF 3.2 and mt seod command

Dear Folks,

        We just moved an exabyte tape drive from an IRIX machine to an
Alphastation 250 4/266.

        On the alpha, the tape drive no longer will space to the end
of the recorded media, whereas it used to do this on the SGI. (using
mt feom under IRIX)

        Is this an undocumented bug of the SCSI/CAM mt driver?
According to the documentation, mt seod will fail on some drives which
do not support the command. However, this drive used to do this under
IRIX.

        Any ideas? I am trying to get a user script to do cpio archiving
converted.
