DIGITAL ANNOUNCES NEW RELEASE OF INDUSTRY'S
                LEADING 64-BIT UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM

Fourth Release of 64-bit Digital UNIX Extends Digital's Leadership
Position With New Ease-of-use and Performance Enhancements

MAYNARD, Mass., March 8, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced a new release of its industry-leading 64-bit operating
system, Digital UNIX(r) Version 4.0. Among the new features in
Digital UNIX V4.0 are ease-of-use enhancements, greater application
portability, networking advancements and overall performance and
scalability improvements.

With this release, new features have been added to Digital UNIX
to simplify installation, and make systems easier to use and manage.
Version 4.0 is the industry's first 64-bit UNIX to:

o Fully integrate the Common Desktop Environment (CDE)
graphical user interface, which provides a common
look-and-feel and improves application portability with
        other UNIX brands.

o Receive X/Open(r) branding for UNIX 95. Digital UNIX
achieved this status by demonstrating complete conformance
to the Single UNIX Specification (formerly known as
        SPEC1170) administered by X/Open. UNIX 95 conformance
assures users that Digital UNIX is fully open and consistent
with the industry's most current standards, which helps to
        protect users long-term software investment.

o Conform to the industry's new 64-bit UNIX standards and
programming model, LP64, which were announced on February 14
        at UniForum 96.

     "Digital's 64-bit story now represents a major win -- 12 to 18
months of meaningful differentiation," said Greg Weiss, research
analyst, D.H. Brown Associates, Inc. "Digital can present a
complete 64-bit solution that does not face any significant future
hurdles. It's not a promise, it's a reality supported by
industry-accepted TPM-C records."

New Features Improve System Management, Portability and Performance

Digital UNIX V4.0 maintains binary compatibility with Digital
UNIX V3.x, ensuring full investment protection for current users.
Added investment protection and application portability are provided
through support for POSIX threads and realtime standards, X11R6, and
support for UNICODE, which makes internationalization simpler.

Quick and easy installation and system management features
include the new graphical SysMan system management interface.
SysMan simplifies configuration, user account management, daily
systems administration, storage management and system monitoring and
tuning. Support for the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
means that PC clients can be configured automatically, while
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) support improves dial-in capabilities
for remote users.

Using the bundled Netscape Navigator client, users have a
single, familiar interface for browsing Internet websites and
accessing the system's HTML-based user documentation. Increased
network throughput and transmission speed is provided through
enhancements to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and Network File
System (NFS) environments.

"We've worked with Digital to provide the fastest open systems
database servers on the planet, and now with Digital UNIX V4.0 these
systems will be easier to use and manage," said David Puglia,
director, Digital Products Division, Oracle Corporation. "Customers
looking for world-class database solutions will be delighted with
the combination of Oracle7, and Digital's 64-bit UNIX Alpha
systems."

Provides Full Benefits of Industry-Standard 64-bit UNIX

The LP64 programming model, now part of the industry's new
64-bit standards, has been the basis of Digital UNIX since March
1993, which now provides Digital and its customers with a
significant competitive advantage. The 64-bit capabilities enable
Digital UNIX to provide unsurpassed application and database
performance with such applications as data warehousing and decision
support, through its ability to address Very Large Memory (VLM64)
and very large file systems. In December 1995, for example, a
Digital AlphaServer 8400 running Digital UNIX and Oracle7, recorded
the highest database performance ever achieved on a single system on
the TPC-C(r) benchmark.

"With Digital UNIX V4.0, Digital continues to lead the way for
64-bit UNIX computing," said Don Harbert, vice president, UNIX
Business Segment, Digital Equipment Corp. "Today, users can reap
the benefits of this proven, 64-bit, standards-compliant UNIX
operating system, which provides unprecedented application
performance and scalability. Digital's 64-bit Alpha systems are
redefining the expectations of customers in the productivity of
their IT investments."

Pricing and Availability

Digital UNIX V4.0 will ship in March, 1996. All current
Digital UNIX users covered under software service agreements will be
upgraded at no charge. Pricing for those users not covered under
software service agreements begins at $795 for a Digital UNIX V4.0
two-user license and media. Purchasers of Digital AlphaStations and
AlphaServers receive Digital UNIX as part of their system.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open
client/server solutions from personal computing to integrated
worldwide information systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms,
storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-
focused solutions from business partners, help organizations compete
and win in todays global marketplace.
