Hi,
I currently am using the University of Washington POP3/IMAP
server V3.3(18) on my DEC Unix V3.2c servers. I am an Internet Service
Provider with about 2,000 customers on about 150 dialin lines. I am
running this POP3 server on a 166Mhz Alpha. I have also tried the latest
Qualcomm POP3 server and had the same problems.
The problem I am having is that my customers Mail Clients are
timing out while trying to retrieve and send mail. This appears, upon
investigation, that it is associated with the Compuserve/Spry Internet in
a Box V2.0 Mail Client. There seems to be no problems with other Mail
clients such as Eudora with this timeout problem. One of the other
problems is with attachements. The Mail Clients occassionally time out
trying to download large attachements over dialup lines. My current
service is over a 14.4Kb dialup lines. I am going to have 28.8kb service
available in April. I don't have any problems getting the attachements
over my LAN connected to the mail server. This attachement problem also
happens with the latest Netscape V2.0 Mail Client.
This main server is also the main SMTP SendMail server for all
mail in my domain, which may be using resources. The average idle time
is averaging between 80% to 95% idle. I am in the process of installing
a new Alpha 400/233 server to move some of the other services off of this
box, which will also help on the load.
I am using Telebit NetBlazer 40 Servers for the dialin
connections, which are running well. I don't believe that there is a
problem with them since surfing the Web and other TCP/IP apps run fine.
What I am looking for is advice on what would be the most robust
POP3 server to use and possible tweeks to the code I should be aware of.
Thanks in advance,
Neil :-)
