I still have no good idea why one keyboard is different from another,
but I do now understand why xterm was sending along DEL instead of ^H.
Setting a resource
XTerm*backspaceIsDelete: false
or using the -/+bs, or using the Ctrl-MB2 popup menu all affect this
weird behavior.

I just noticed that xterm on Digital UNIX (I don't have access to any
other UNIX system right now) has a -/+bs switch to enable/disable sending
Delete instead of Backspace. This option can also be toggled in the
Ctrl-MB2 popup menu. Give that a try to see if it helps.
