Default routers

I am running OSF V3.2 on an Alphastation 200/ 4-100.
We are in the situation where every other week or so,
or whenever we reboot, any hosts which are not in our
/etc/hosts file become unreachable.

So far we have always been able to restore the network functions
with

route add default 128.204.1.1
                                        (that's our gateway)

but there is no explanation as to why we sometimes lose the
connection spontaneously and why
the network does not automatically
come back after reboot.

Our system guru, and what I understand from the man pages, says we
should put the following in /etc/routes

default 128.204.1.1

But that doesn't make any difference.

We are starting routed as

/usr/sbin/routed -q

Any help is appreciated.
