Hello.
I am looking at setting up about 70-100 PPP dial-in lines to a
DEC Alpha 3000/600 for use by about 3,000 people in my office and
a group of eager clients who need access to a web server on my net.
I have been looking at a couple of options for granting access to
validated company associates but I am not sure which would be better.
I would prefer not to create accounts on my Alpha 3000 but instead
just somehow validate that the caller is a real user and THEN allow
them to connect to OTHER resources on my network besides the Alpha.
(I don't have anything important on the alpha, but there is nothing
on it that my clients would want anyway)
My question is: Should I somehow attach 70 modems directly to the
Alpha and if so how would I do this? I know about digiboards for
PCs which allow 20 or so serial ports to be added to a Intel box.
Is there something simular for the Alpha?
Another option I was told about is to use a terminal server to
provide PPP, but this seems like an expensive solution since a
terminal server would have to be purchased. I am also unclear
as to how the terminal server could validate users. Wouldn't
a terminal server just let everyone use my PPP lines?
I appreciate any help or ideas the people on this list may
have - and I would especially like to hear from someone who is
already doing this and has the straight dope on it.
Thanks.
M. Kingston
PS. Any modem recommendations for this? :)
