>From the responses I got, this was an easy one. Thanks to one and all, I
had the answers by morning.

I wanted to give users permission to use the floppy drive with Mtools.

The most common solution by far was to chmod 777 (or 666) /dev/rfd*, which
works great!

I also recieved the following ideas:

You could also run the tools setuid, perhaps, but I also have to
discourage that as a potential security problem.

If you only want some users to have permissions to use the floppy you
could make a group 'floppy', do a 'chgrp floppy /dev/rfd0c',
set the permissions of /dev/rfd0c to rw-rw----, and add the
appropriate users to the floppy group.

you need to install sudo, which grants certain privileges to ordinary
users and indicate that the mtools stuff, which access data that only
root should have access to, may be used by other users in that limited
capacity.
