Hello Aaron,

The name Interleaf rang bells in my head and I see there is a mention
about a problem with Interleaf in the Digital UNIX 3.2 release notes
(6.1.1), but this talks about a repainting problem when manipulating
PullDown or PopUp menus, so probably unrelated.

The fix they describe is to disable Save-Unders by editing
/var/X11/xdm/Xservers and adding -su to the end of the last line
(beginning with :0)... in case you're interested. Sorry I can't help
more.

Regards,
Jon Buchanan, Zuerich, Switzerland

The 3.2c patch list contains the following patch information:

/usr/sys/BINARY/fifo_vnops.o subset OSFBIN350
CHECKSUM: 21648 72 RCS: 4.3.44.2
------------------------------------------------

PATCH ID: OSF350-008 Subset(s): OSFBIN350

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

A kernel re-build required.

PROBLEM: (Patch ID: OSF350-008) (HPXQ71268)
********
Processes that do fcntl() operations on pipes will sometimes
hang when trying to exit or become zombies (defunct processes).
Customers using Interleaf are strongly urged to apply this patch.

I would assume there is a similar patch for other versions of 3.2

I had this problem and needed to apply the patch.
The patch is the file fifo_vnops.o that needs to be placed in the
/sys/BINARY directory before building a new kernel.
Without this patch Ileaf6 lets "zombi" processes that use a *lot of* system
resources (virtual memory).

Our site is running INTERLEAF6.1 on OSF3.2C. This is a patch that we obtained
from DEC to resolve the problem with the hangs. There are pathches for other
versions of OSF1 which resolve that problem.

We had this same problem on our 3.2C alpha's. After going round and round
with Interleaf and DEC, DEC finally sent a patch that fixed our problem. We
found no other solution.
