I am still amazed with the efficiency of this list. It turns out
that I have to upgrade the firmware to at least 3.4 and DU to
version 3.2c or 3.2d.
My original request is at the bottom of this message.
Here is one particularly interresting answer from Selden E. Ball, Jr.
where he suggest upgrading to 3.2d instead of 3.2c.

Jocelyn,
In order to have reliable support for the DE500 10/100 e'net
interface, you need to upgrade your system's firmware to the most
recent version (at least to what is shipped on firmware CD V3.4)
and you need to upgrade Digital Unix to V3.2D.
The two most recent versions of the firmware (as on Firmware CD V3.4
and V3.5) recognize Digital's 10/100 PCI ethernet chip and show the
vendor name.
DU V3.2D includes patches for framing errors seen in V3.2C when one
uses a DE500 at high througput.
Do not bother trying to use 3rd party PCI 10/100 e'net interfaces,
even those which use Digital chips. There are bugs in the system
firmware which have not yet been resolved: it misreads the cards' MAC
addresses.
(We use DE500 boards in several AlphaStations. We encountered exactly
the
same problem that you see, which was resolved by upgrading both
firmware and operating system.)
I hope this helps.
Selden

Subject: Fast EtherWORKS PCI 10/100 in Alpha 1000 not recongnized
Author: Jocelyn Guay at NRCan
Date: 02/04/96 10:47
Last night I tried installing a "Fast EtherWORKS PCI 10/100" (part
number: EK-DE500-OM) 100BaseT card in Alpha 1000 running DU 3.2, but
the Alpha refused to recongnize the board. All I could see in the
show config at the console prompt was:
Slot 11 : ? 1011 : Device 9
I still tried regenerating the kernel using the generic kernel but it
did not recognize the board either (as expected).
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Or is this board simply not
supported on the alpha 1000?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
