I am trying to read VMS backup tapes onto a Unix workstation.
Got the "vmsbacku.z" file from gatekeeper.dec.com. It doesn't work right,
unfortunately. After some hacking around with the source I got it to
read off the label and the "VOL1" and "HDR[1-4]" pieces, but it didn't
quite deal with these correctly (since I know what's on the tape) and barfed
fairly quickly after reading in this part. For those familiar with
this code, it correctly identified the blocksize specified in the
label section (ascii text) then read in a block of data which
contained the actual data portion of a file, but instead tried to
interpret this as part of some "block_header" structure, leading to
apparent disagreement in expected and obtained header sizes. The first
actual file name was contained in one of the 80-byte "HDR" sections,
so I think the code is ignoring some stuff it should be paying
attention to.
Has anyone kept this guy up to date and/or improved it?
Or are there some alternatives out there? Like a description of a VMS
backup tape format? I believe the "vbackup" utility is not free,
contrary to what I've heard from some previous e-mail requests.
TIA
