A short time ago, I asked the following question:

>We're looking for a way to print 2-up (the default output from a2ps) to a
>number of HP 2's, 3's and 4's WITHOUT postscript and WITHOUT using
>ghostscript and a2ps. In essence, I'm looking for an "a2pcl" filter. I have
>considered using a2ps-->gs-->printer, but the overhead is very high
>and for high volumes this is not an acceptable solution.

>Does anyone have any pointers besides "use ghostscript" or "write it
>myself" (the obvious but not acceptable choices)?

First off, I'd like to thank the following people for their responses (in the
order in which their messages appeared in my inbox):

Stam Nicolis <nicolis_at_chiral.phys.univ-tours.fr>
Roddy McColl PhD <roddy_at_mri.swmed.edu>
Phil Antoine <antoine_at_RadOnc.Duke.EDU>
Andy "speed-racer" Wagliardo <awagliar_at_cs.vt.edu>
fayez <fayez_at_host.igs.net>
Juergen Bock <bock_at_dbf.ddb.de>
Thomas Erskine <tom_at_clark.dgim.doc.ca>

Every one of the above folks sent great ideas, but Roddy McColl had the
answer I was looking for: a set of "cookbook" HP LJ filters that output the
appropriate PCL code to any HP printer (well, his were written for a
HPLJ3, but I tested it on a HPLJ4V which worked just fine). If anyone is
interested in them, Dr. McColl has graciously allowed me to offer them to
anyone on the net. I can forward them to anyone individually (the tar file
is 13k) who has a need for them. They worked on a DEC AXP
3000-800S running OSF/1 v3.2 without modification, even though Dr.
McColl indicated that they had only been known to work on a Sun 4/260.

Once again, this list proves to be invaluable!
