routes not being used

We are using Alpha 3000/300's. We are not using dynamic routing and have the
following entry in the /etc/routes file:

        -net xxx.yyy.zzz xxx.yyy.zzz.1

this works. However, when a host specific entry is added, all connectivity to
the above network is lost and the specific host is unreachable. That is if the
following route is added

        xxx.yyy.zzz.AAA xxx.yyy.zzz.1

then all communications to the specified network fail.
