Everyone was very helpful. The tip came from joe who pointed out that older
JetDirect cards don't understand "lpd". It turns out that this was the problem.
Joe was kind enough to provide the procedure, guidelines for a filter script and
the source necessary to telnet print jobs to my printers. I am happy to report
that this works *beautifully* and I am very grateful.
