"ace" serial ports, no man page?

I apologize for bothering the list for such a trivial problem, but I
am pretty much stumped at this time. We have an AlphaServer 2000
4/200 running DU v3.2 that was given to us by DEC for work on a joint
project. The only documentation is cdrom. I have been trying to set
up PPP on this machine and first wanted to get the serial ports
configured. From looking at the the current major/minor numbers on
the tty00 and tty01 ports, I found that they are "ace" devices. There
are man pages for dc(7) and scc(7), but alas, no ace(7). I combed the
cdroms looking for info about setting up serial ports for modem use
and found precious little. I was expecting the typical (SunOS, HPUX)
technique of using a bit in the minor device number to turn on modem
control. In any case "file /dev/tty00 /dev/tty01" results in:
/dev/tty00: character special (35/0) ACE_SLU #0 terminal #0 modem_control off
/dev/tty01: character special (35/1) ACE_SLU #0 terminal #1 modem_control off

Doing a "stty -f /dev/tty00 -clocal" has no effect. I am concerned
about using these ports for PPP if modem control is not working. If
you can point me to documentation on these ports that can answer
questions like:
1. Do both ports support full modem control, or only the first?
2. How do you enable modem control?
3. What is the highest DTE speed these ports support? Looks like
38400.
4. Any way of doing dialin/dialout on the same port?

Thanks in advance,
