My Original posting was

  I have a weird problem in that I cannot ping my Alpha 1000 Box. I
  checked and rechecked the cables (Coaxial). Putting a pc there works
  fine - so can't be the cable. I ran the usual netsetup command and
  everything looks fine.

  The only funny - is that when the system boots it reports :

   tu0: auto sensing: selected AUI (10Base2|5) port (NO CARRIER)

  The system has a AUI port and a coaxial connector. The cabling is
  Coaxial. Could it be detecting the network incorrectly ? If so is
  there anyway I could force it to use the coaxial port ?

The answer was twofold,

>>> show ewa0_mode

Make sure that it is set to BNC ie,

>>> set ewa0_mode BNC

Also if this doesn't work - check the ethernet card for jumper settings,
to make sure that the ethernet interface type isn't set up incorrectly -
if so, correct them.
