Any recommended compilers

Dear all,

I'm looking for suggestions on good C compilers for DEC Alpha boxes. We are
currently running DU v3.2c

Some of the applications that our research group have been working on are being
ported to PC's and other workstations. We have found ourselves in the
embarassing situation that when compiled on these other platforms a whole host
of warnings and even errors are thrown up by these other compilers. Clearly the
standard DEC C compiler is very very tolerant of lazy/ambiguous/etc coding. Some
of the stuff which has got through is unbelievable and rather frightening!

So can anyone tell me how far they have been able to crank up the warning level
on the DEC C compiler, and if there are any more stringent compilers out there.
Someone in our research group actually suggested using the DEC C++ compiler. Do
you know if it is more pedantic than the C compiler?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Regards,
Graeme
