[SUMMARY] ISDN on the Alpha 3000 series

Here is a summary of the support of the onboard ISDN adapter for
AlphaServers 3000:

1) DU supports this device with the "Wide area networking support V?? for
Digital UNIX" Layered Software (SPD 42.47.10)

2) The onboard adapter (BBA) seams to support only one chanel (64Kb) although
the SPD (table 7) mentions it supports 2

3) The last issue seams to be pricing! The software seams to be more
expensive than an ISDN router (but the software does more than just a router
   ... X.29 comms, X.25 mail .. etc)

Have fun,
/jean

I haven't done it, but I believe you will need the X25 kit. From what I have heard the
instructions should be in the X25 docs.

I haven't done it (decided that for our purposes, a RouteAbout Remote
Access Router EI or non-DEC equivalent would be better), but if you
haven't found it yet, the documentation for the ISDN software is on
the Bookreader under the shelf "X.25 for Digital UNIX Systems"; some
(installation & config) manuals cover both X.25 and ISDN, plus there's
an ISDN Adminstration Guide ... probably the SPD from on of the X.25
subsets (if you have the CD-ROM distribution) would detail supported
hardware, but FWIS, the gist of a similar thread on Info-VAX was that
the DEC 3000 ISDN port is supported under OSF/1 (but not OpenVMS).

I've done this and it is not terribly difficult but there were two
major reasons why we are not using it:

1. You only get one B channel. (only 64kbps instead of 128kbps)
2. The price of the software from DEC that was needed to drive
the ISDN port was more than the cost of a ISDN router, so we
   just purchased ISDN routers instead.
