Greetings again
I was just forced to kill off and restart xdm on our
DU3.2c 3400S (again) from scratch, after trying without luck to
kick some life into it with kill -1 (to reload the
config tables), etc. We operate a collection of Xterminals
that run local choosers so that users can fire up XDM
sessions on a variety of hosts. A short while ago
our alpha stopped honouring requests for XDM sessions
for no apparent reason on all Xterminals - an XDMCP request just hangs
until a timeout occurs. This annoyance happens every so often.
Restarting the process (kill -9, then /usr/bin/X11/xdm -config
/usr/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-config.fs) usually restores things. I've
taken to typing a simple "xdm" at the system console when users
complain about not being able to log in, as it seems that xdm
itself often spontaneously dies as well (about once a week).
This server has no graphics console, so the relevant bits in the
config file are commented-out. I just noticed a line relating to
DEC's chooser is left uncommented (relevent, perhaps?) but again
the only error messages relate to exit status. Here's our xdm-config:

Any clues? The only error in the log, which is less than helpful,
was a complaint about an unknown exit status by /usr/bin/X11/xdm
every now and then (ostensibly when users log out from Xterms,
but only occasionally)
